Associate Priest

Mariama is the Safeguarding and Welfare Lead for the England Women’s Teams at the Football Association, and combines this role with being a part-time priest. Mariama attended theological college at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford. She is Associate Priest at St James’s Piccadilly and a Priest Vicar at Westminster Abbey, with responsibility for deputising for the Chaplain to the Speaker and saying prayers in Parliament. Prior to this, Mariama was Head of the Salters’ Institute and Head of Outreach Solutions at the University of Oxford. Mariama has over 20 years’ experience specialising in organisational and strategic leadership, and has worked in the education and charity sectors. She is a modern linguist, with a degree in French and Spanish from the University of St Andrews. Her love of languages propelled her to embark on an MPhil in European Literature and Culture at the University of Cambridge, which was followed by a PhD in Spanish, also at Cambridge. In 2009, Mariama was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to New York University. She later completed an MA in Careers Education and Coaching at the University of Derby. Mariama is a qualified careers and guidance leader and practitioner. Committed to equity and inclusivity, Mariama thoroughly enjoys working to empower and enable all, especially children, young people and women to fully flourish and thrive. Born in SW London, and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and North-West London, Mariama has been trying to see and meet the world ever since.
